Nicholas Mickelsen

My name is Nicholas Mickelsen from St.Albert, Alberta, Canada. I am 19 years of age and am currently traveling throughout Denmark visiting friends, family and several ecovillages throughout the country. I decided to visit The Renewable Village because of my concerns regarding peak oil, climate change etc. etc. I had finished my first year of college towards a major in economics but had found the program to be unbelievably boring. I figured that being single and without any major obligtions I was free to travel and see the world.

I spent several weeks in northern Quebec visiting one ecovillage south of Chicoutimi, then took the plane from Montrel to Munich to visit Oktoberfest. I visited several friends throughout Germany before coming to Denmark via Berlin roughly 2 weeks ago. I visited several relatives in Esbjerg then hopped the next train to southern Fyn!

My first impressions of the ecovillage were somewhat skeptical. I suppose after spending two months amounst 'normal' European society I was throw into a minor culture shock. 12 hours later I was completely at home.

This place is so wonderful. They grow their own food, they produce a decent portion of their own energy. They are on their way to self sufficiency while raising young families and holding down a job all at the same time.

a post for my first day here

I have not leaved you yet and to be precise, I have just been here for one single day, yet, I was adviced by TorJordbo (and I´m greatly thanking for that !) to fill up the wiki to tell my experience here. So that, this first attempt is just a kind of draft. What strikes me at my arrival was the smile on everyone's mouth. I don't know if it's a danish custom but it's very agreeble and "trusty". I cannot say more for the moment but I am sure I would have a lot to tell at the end of my dwelling and I would have a lot to say about community and self sustaining experience. Just "Merci" for my first day !

and one for the end of my stay

I'm leaving soon to go back in France, hence this post. I just want to thank all of you for this experience and for the very nice way you welcomed me. I've learned so much things from you and I wish I could come back here later and see what your wonderful growing village has become. And if I can spend a few days here next year, (and, of course, if you agree) I won't hesitate a second ! I only hope that I've given the most of my help. I'm sure that, back in France, I will miss the village...

just a last one for my second stay in the village

I had a so great experience last year and I really wanted to come back. I was then welcomed again ! Some houses are quite finished (at my first stay in '07, Tor was just beginning to build !), children have grown up, and I am really happy to be volunteer again !

Ivan and Anita

Hi, we came to visit this village cause we’re interested in this lifestyle that is community, self building, perm culture (and many others). It was nice to meet the people here. It looks like you are courageous to take the process at the beginning.

We hope you plenty of good things. Ivan and Anita and Alice and Léa

Thank you sooooo much!

I really enjoyed staying in your community. Especially my interviewees! Thank you for sharing your precious time and experience. I learned a lot from your life, opinion ….. I really wanted to interview the other people as well :-))

If I use these interviews, I’ll contact you to ask. (But I’m not sure if I can use them or not.) But! Absolutely I’ll introduce your community to South Korea.

Your project is nicer & much more amazing than I expected. I wish your community all the best for the next steps. I also look forward to the finish of your houses. I know travelling is not good for the environment. But if you have a chance to visit Korea, Please contact me.

Good-bye!

Jane, the Australian, not from New Zealand

Just wrote lots of stuff and it didn't work, :(

Will try again...

So, been here over a week now, and heading off tomorrow. It will be strange to be on the road again. I guess because there's lots of people here it can take a little longer to settle in than if you're staying with one or two people! So what have a been up to, baking, collecting food, eating, mud slinging, weeding, path building, moving building materials...baby sitting, the list goes on. Oh yes and introducing everyone to pumpkin scones!
